![]() ![]() ![]() Used by arrangement with Penguin Group (USA), Inc. ![]() Given the debates it provokes, the impact of its policies and the price wars it wages, getAbstract welcomes this look behind Wal-Mart's shelves. A case in point is Charles Fishman's The Wal-Mart Effect, which describes the company as having a 'decidedly mixed economic impact' largely on the basis of a study claiming that the retailer destroyed more jobs in 2005 than it created. Wal-Mart is nearly impervious to external impact, but Fishman has made it far more knowable. With huge stores across the US and worldwide, Wal-Mart, according to Charles Fishman, is not just "the world's most powerful company," it is an "economic ecosystem." Railing against it is like shaking your fist at a tsunami. And whatever you think of Wal-Mart, you can't ignore it. For many shoppers, these are uncomfortable contrasts. So what are they to think about Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.? Is it the world's most rapacious retailer or a great place for a bargain? Does it rule its suppliers, forcing them to run overseas sweatshops to compete or does it spur more economical products? Does it pay rock bottom wages and relentlessly pursue profits, sales, market dominance and cheap goods, or does it provide rare relief for the consumer? The accusations sound daunting, unless you are a budget-weary customer. Most people are generally in favor of both a just society and low prices. Recently my friend from Kinderbookswitheverything talked about The Mitten and the way she had several versions in her school library but there was one she especially liked. One review called this a "progression tale." In the version by Alvin Tresselt, pictured above, the mitten disintegrates after the arrival of the final creature whereas in Jan Brett's version the boy finds the mitten and we see his grandmother standing puzzled as she compares its size against the original. ![]() In the version by Alvin Tresselt the mitten is taken over by a tiny mouse, a green frog, an owl, a rabbit, a fox, a wolf, a wild boar, a bear and finally a tiny cricket. In the Jan Brett version the animals include a snowshoe rabbit, a mole, a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, a fox, a giant brown bear and a tiny meadow mouse. The mitten stretches and stretches to accommodate animals which are diverse in size and temperament. A series of animals discover the warm mitten and each one climbs inside. ![]() A young boy (or in some versions an old man) drops his mitten in the snow. ![]() ![]() ![]()

So who are the faeries, where do they come from…and what do they want? Faerie-tales His assessment fits well with both folktale motifs, and some modern theories about their ancient origins and how they have permeated the collective human consciousness. In his 1691 treatise on the faeries of Aberfoyle, Scotland, the Reverend Robert Kirk suggested they represented a Secret Commonwealth, living in a parallel reality to ours, with a civilization and morals of their own, only visible to seers and clairvoyants. In terms of accuracy, Ariadne sticks to the source material painfully well in some parts, then veers wildly off-course in others. ![]() Thankfully, Ariadne has officially made me resent the idea of mythological/sociological accuracy, especially when it comes at the detriment of a good story. ![]() My efforts have led me to hits ( Great Goddesses by Nikita Gill) and some misses ( Wake, Siren: Ovid Resung by Nina MacLaughlin). For me, it’s the intense need to criticize any Greek mythology retellings on the basis that they don’t match the “original mythos.” A terrible habit, true, but one I’ve made some effort to break. For Horse Girls, this usually involves the current horse-themed films not being “as good” as those of the past. My relationship to Greek mythology is similar to that of a local elementary school’s Horse Girl meaning it was one of my first obsessions in elementary school, at some point I made it my entire personality, and now I’m stuck with a strange nostalgia that makes it both easier and harder to absorb any media about it. ![]() ![]() ![]() The same absence in budget training is also in this book.)ĭave Ramsey talks about gazelle-like intensity relating to the debt snowball.
